Poor Theresa was ambushed by Tory rebels and Corbyniskis who were hell-bent to disagree with whatever she came back with. She did cut a sorry sight and the EU-27 thought they had us over a barrel.

Boris signing the Withdrawal Agreement [WA] eased the noose around our neck. There are some unsavoury things therein, no doubt, but it makes a good viewing now to see the EU-27 wooing us to keep talking in the hope of getting some deal. A deal would be nice, but not at any unfavourable condition/cost.

Brexit: UK-EU trade talks to resume over 'critical issues'

The UK and EU have decided to return to the negotiating table to try to agree a post-Brexit trade deal, despite "significant differences".

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen made the decision during a phone call on Saturday.

A statement said there were three "critical issues" to address.

Negotiating teams will reconvene in Brussels on Sunday, and the leaders will speak again on Monday evening.

In the joint statement from Mr Johnson and Ms Von der Leyen, they said fishing rights, competition rules and how any deal is enforced were still causing problems, with the statement adding: "Both sides underlined that no agreement is feasible if these issues are not resolved."

But the leaders continued: "Whilst recognising the seriousness of these differences, we agreed that a further effort should be undertaken by our negotiating teams to assess whether they can be resolved."

The BBC's political editor, Laura Kuenssberg, said the next meeting "feels like a last roll of the dice, rather than ironing out a few last minute glitches", and the next 48 hours would be "critical".

The UK left the EU on 31 January but remains under EU trading rules until the end of the year.

The two sides have been holding talks since March in an attempt to secure a deal before this time, which is called the transition period, ends on 31 December.

If a deal is not agreed by that point, tariffs - or taxes on goods - could come into force.

But the same three sticking points have stopped negotiating teams coming to an agreement, and on Friday, talks came to an end with both sides saying "significant divergences" remained.

Brexit: EU-UK trade deal expected, as cabinet briefed

The EU and UK appear close to striking a post-Brexit trade deal, with Boris Johnson briefing his cabinet on the progress of talks in Brussels.

Disputes over fishing rights and future business competition rules have been the major hurdles to agreement during months of often fraught talks.

But BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg said Downing Street now seemed "very confident" of a deal.

Negotiators are now thought to be thrashing out the final details.

The deal is expected to be around 2,000 pages long, with both sides having until 31 December - when the UK leaves EU trading rules - get it approved by parliamentarians.

A deal would end the prospect of the two sides imposing widespread import taxes - tariffs - on each other's goods from 1 January, which could have affected prices.

EU sources said the UK prime minister and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had also been in contact in an attempt to break the deadlock before the expected pause in negotiations for Christmas.

    BBC News: Wednesday 30 December 2020;
Brexit: MPs overwhelmingly back post-Brexit deal with EU

MPs have overwhelmingly approved the UK's post-Brexit trade deal with the EU in a parliamentary vote.

A bill bringing the deal into UK law was backed by the Commons by 521 to 73 votes after Parliament was recalled.

The majority of Labour MPs voted for the agreement after leader Sir Keir Starmer said a "thin deal was better than no deal".

The UK will sever its ties with the EU at 23.00 GMT on Thursday, four and a half years after the Brexit referendum.

The agreement hammered out with Brussels over nine months sets out a new business and security relationship between the UK and its biggest trading partner.

The EU (Future Relationship) Bill is being rushed through Parliament in a single day and is set to become law late on Wednesday once it has received Royal Assent.

After five hours of debate in the Commons, it passed its two legislative hurdles by huge margins, thanks to Mr Johnson's large majority and the support of the Labour Party. It is now being considered by the Lords.

In an interview with the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg, the Prime Minister said the treaty would allow the UK to "go our own way but also have free trade" with the EU.

He said: "There will be changes. And we've been very clear with people that they have to get ready for 1 January, things will work differently.

"But from the point of view of UK exporters, for instance, they'll now have the advantage, that they'll only have one set of forms they have to fill out for export to around the whole world."

Offering his backing, Sir Keir - who campaigned against Brexit - told MPs he wanted to "avoid a no deal and put in place a floor from which we can build a strong future relationship".
