Perhaps their demand for an additional $50 from each passenger tended to put off potential customers?

In the same way Norwich demands 10 for an “Airport Development Fee”. Durham Tees Valley won’t facilitate your journey unless you pay a 6 “Passenger Facility Fee”. And Newquay insists travellers must hand over a fiver “to help fund the development of facilities and infrastructure”.

They are all "at it" nowadays.

Air Zimbabwe, a state-owned airline saddled with debts exceeding $330 million, has plunged deeper into crisis after its entire aircraft fleet was grounded due to mechanical problems and the failure by the cash-strapped government to provide funds for vital spare parts.

On Tuesday, all five planes were declared un-airworthy.....

By my calculation, Norwich airport made 5m from punters in the last year through this departure tax (I paid a few quid towards that total). They fleeced the local council to pay 2m towards their new airport radar, using 3m from the airport tax to pay the remainder.

Now I wonder what that spare 2m went on, nicer lounge facilities for pax - nope, still the same. Nice new car park - nope, still got the same pot holes it had from years ago. In fact the only improvement I can see is the closing of the toilets on the arrivals exit, they moved the door to the arrivals area rather than the public area. Is that an improvement?

What Norwich should do is pay for some customer facing training to be delivered to their baggage security staff who are (generally) the most obnoxious I have ever come across, and that includes all the international airports I travel through, including those in Africa. Only once did I find the security staff at Norwich to be both upbeat, and job-minded. Two younger guys who were enjoying their job, getting along with customers and a wholly pleasant experience. Normally it is pants, not a smile in sight, 'assume the position'. You have been warned.

Never! UK politics is far more sanitized than the mayhem Uncle Bob has created in Zim. UK opposition parties are in disarray by their own doing or undoing, not by govt attacks and victimisation.
