Default Virgin Atlantic Mulls Takeover of Flybe

Virgin Atlantic in possible takeover talks with Flybe

UK long-haul carrier Virgin Atlantic has confirmed it is “reviewing its options” over a possible bid for Exeter-based UK regional airline Flybe, which has also confirmed that discussions are underway.

Earlier this month, Flybe said it was seeking a buyer as part of a strategic review, adding that talks have begun with interested parties.

Flybe has been slimming its operations for some time, as it attempts to divest itself of a surplus of aircraft and unprofitable routes. On top of this, the airline has been hit by the rising fuel prices, softening demand, currency exchange fluctuations and increasingly stiff competition that has already seen several European carriers fail this year.

Following news reports that talks were underway, both Virgin Atlantic and Flybe released statements to the London Stock Exchange Nov. 23.

In its filing, Flybe Group’s board “notes the recent media speculation and confirms that Virgin Atlantic Airways Limited is one of the parties it is in discussions with as part of the formal sale process announced on Nov. 14, 2018.”

No details were given about the terms of any possible deal. “Further announcements will be made in due course, as appropriate,” Flybe said.

For its part, Virgin Atlantic said it noted Flybe’s announcement: “Virgin Atlantic has a trading and codeshare relationship with Flybe and confirms that it is reviewing its options in respect of Flybe, which range from enhanced commercial arrangements to a possible offer for Flybe.”

Both companies stressed there is no certainty that an offer will be made.

Virgin Atlantic is part-owned by Delta Air Lines and will soon have Air France-KLM as a shareholder. Over the years, Virgin has made several attempts to branch out into short-haul European operations. In the past, it courted UK-based bmi, which was ultimately merged into British Airways (BA). More recently, Virgin set up a wet-lease short-haul operation in partnership with Aer Lingus, called ‘Little Red’, although this operation was shut down in 2015 because of weak demand.

Big company taking over a smaller outfit can work--but. Seem to remember the worlds favourite taking over a west country airline. Unfortunately they also brought in all their own management who tried to run the airline like a big Heathrow operator! Huge management numbers complete with company cars and subsidized housing for the management team. Closed down a money earning contract for oil industry support and then dropped out of a rapidly expanding inner city route. All downhill from the start.

Reads like the Brymon story in a nutshell. If so, Brymon later got merged with the Isle of Man outfit to become BACX [BA CitiExpress], then BA Connect and finally got sold to Flybe. Guess it would be too raw for BA to come looking in on this one...after all the former TUPE wars...

Interesting history Virgin may be buying something BA had owned and may still have a small stake hidden in the small print!
