Thread: Duplicate Inspection under A license?

i have carried out dupes under my A licence.

at my company a dupe is required during a brake change for torque rod attachment.

i hold approvals for brakes, i always assumed therefore i can sign the dupe.

i know you can only sign for your own work, but the way i see it is i am signing for my inspection, not the actual brake change.

can't think of any other dupes i would encounter in the scope of my approvals

The 'same guy returns later to do the duplicate inspection' is used more commonly in Euroland rather than the UK.

It is very unusual for a Cat A to be permitted to certify duplicate inspections as it is against CAA policy in the UK. This also applies to simple 'leak checks' as far as I know.

Obviously, it is possible for an MOE to specify that this can occur with specific training and approval. In the case of wheels and brakes, this training and experience is probably going to be a lot more for an A than some B's (as they are normally on other tasks) so it would probably be OK in the real World but I expect that there would be a CAA Surveyor blowing his gaskets over this discussion.

Some of this ambiguity could be removed with specific task guidance from the CAA, perhaps in the next ELGD (even though its not legal)?

The only duplicate inspection allowed for 'A' Licence holders I have come across is for locking and latching of the fan cowls on the V2500, which has now been extended to the CFM56-5, I don't know whether this is just within our company though.
Will the last one out, please switch off the light

The only dupes an A license certifier can sign at our place is the second dupe on fan cowls and oil caps!! Think its company policies that decide this, I know A license guys couldn't sign WTL brake units or wheels till recently!

The latest EASA guidance is any competent person can sign the second dupe. It is up the the first signatory to ascertain and assess the second persons competence.
The second person does not need to be an LAE, type rated or even associated in aviation if he is deemed competent to carry out the inspection by the first guy!

That's because EASA don't have Duplicate Inspections.......

And the award for best posts on this topic goes to................................

    Billy no mates again!

    He's the real star.

Billy, what this post can't reveal is the sound of caps being doffed all over the planet and rose petals being scattered in your path!

    Take a bow!

The rest of you need to lighten up!

I'm with you on that one mate, at our place oil caps can be 'duped' by the same person, you go back after the job is finished and check again, however if someone else oiled the other engine (Assuming 2 engines before I get castrated) there is no need for a dupe, under company procedures!!!

That said dupes for things like f/d seats, mcd's, f/ctrs etc need two full grownups to sign!

Cowlings can have an A license man sign the second part but again has to be two peeps!!
